Federal Department of Human Services wins recognition for digital excellence

Australia’s peak service delivery agency, the Department of Human Services, has clinched a prestigious public sector excellence award for an innovative use of digital and on-line channels to connect with customers.

This recognition comes from the Institute of Public Administration Australia under the Excellence in Public Sector Management category. The institute’s Silver Award goes to the Department of Human Services’ management of the myGov web site. This site offers a fast, simple way to access services online.

Terry Moran, National President, Institute of Public Administration of Australia, said these awards honour the achievements of public sector work groups, units and teams rather than individuals. "They focus on specific initiatives and are based on organisations being able to demonstrate success against four criteria," he said.

With a total budget valued at $149.4 billion, the mega Department of Human Services delivers front-line benefits and payments to Australians nationally. These include health, welfare and social payments. The department manages the myGov gateway on behalf of the Australian government.

National payments and services encompass family payments, child support, the processing of Medicare claims, pharmaceutical benefits and managing e-health programs.

Secure online access

Customers can access their myGov account using highly-secure password protocols. Designated inboxes relay messages from service providers like Medicare, Centrelink or child support organisations.

The Department of Human Services’ work is supported by a staff of more than 35, 838 across cities, towns and regionals areas. Portfolio agencies working with this department encompass education, employment, workplace relations, housing, community services, tax as well as veterans’ affairs.

Other IPA award recipients included the Victorian Department of Human Services' "Services Connect" project (Gold Award for Excellence in Public Sector Management and an Innovation Award).

Two Commendations were made - to the Western Australian North Metropolitan Health Services for Graylands Hospital Acute Care Service initiatives, and to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust for the delivery of a leading foreshore park.

Thirty nominations were received from every State and Territory except Tasmania, as well as from federal agencies.
